Ada - Michigan’s Green Stronghold?
December 15, 2004
Speaking of green building, Woodtv.com recently posted a story about a new development coming to Ada. Developed by Legacy Homes of Grand Rapids, the Brookside Development will contain 14 environmentally sensitive homes.
Supposedly, this is the most “green” neighborhood yet to be built in Michigan. I am entirely curious how green these homes will actually be.

Brandon said on December 20, 2004 10:15 AMYeah, I too am curious how "green" a development on the exurban fringe can be. Add up the extra pollution from the commute and I'm pretty sure most benefits of the structures are canceled-out.
There are always simpler solutions, but we always seem to prefer to rely on technology to let us be slightly-less dirty while not actually having to change any of our behaviors.

I'm philosophically ecstatic at the idea of co-housing, yet I will never live in the co-housing developments around Ann Arbor--their goal is to create community through interaction in an environmentally friendly setting, and they tout things like "cars are banished to the periphery". But they locate themselves in the center of 40-acre plots in Scio Twp, removing opportunities for "community" (no neighbors), making the development totally unwalkable outside itself, and making cars banished to the periphery, but still necessary for every family.
