Master

May 23, 2005

Standing in line at JP’s just now, I realized: I have a Master’s Degree. (On another note… is it Masters or Master’s degree? Is a Master of Urban Planning? Since I don’t actually have my diploma yet, I can’t really say for sure.)

Way to go Paul (patting myself on the back). Now you just need to put it to use in some way.

Thinking about that… I’ve been looking for jobs around OKC (Oklahoma City), and I think I’ve found a niche I’d like to fill, but I don’t know how to exactly go about doing that. Since OK is such a conservative state, there seems to be little innovation in engineering. I’m not saying that conservatives can’t be progressive engineers (look at me… somewhat), but it does help to have fresh minds come and with new views, and I don’t necessarily see that happeneing (by just looking at the OKC landscape).

I’d really like to get into stormwater management and look at the way things are done in and around OKC. With water shortages being a problem, I’d think that stormwater management focusing on infiltration and water quality (not just quantity) would be an idealistic approach to management. However, looking at the stormwater systems, all I saw was concrete-lined channels, not exactly condusive to infiltration. If I could somehow get a job changing this, I’d feel right at home.

At 24, coming from out of state, could I possibly have the mettle to get into the fray and cause change? I’d like to think so, but it’ll take some work. I may even have to start my own company promoting new methods… selling rain barrels, promoting onsite infiltration, rain gardens, etc… without a P.E., that may be a little tough. But I’m not against facing a challenge.

i've wanted to mention this since you were in OKC last - when we went driving around - and you made all those comments - so i'm really glad you think you can change things since you're all young and stuff...:)
