Flushing Philadelphia

April 05, 2006

According to an AP article I read today, the city of Philadelphia has allowed a developer to put no-flush urinals in his new high-rise (hoping to be the tallest “environmentally-friendly” building in the U.S.). Good for them… or so you’d think.

In order to get that wonderful idea in the works, however, the city added a requirement that the developer wait another FIVE YEARS before putting no-flush urinals in any other building. WHAT?!?

The article states that plumbers were concered that “the new technology would cut into their work.”

Absolutely ridiculous. Geez.

That's the biggest obstacle to flushless urinals I've seen mentioned, as well. Plumbers expressing concern for public health/safety/welfare that, um, toxic sewer gas - it, uh, could come up through the flushless urinal. And then it would explode! Yeah! That's it! Explode! And the only way to prevent this is to install twice as much plumbing, and hire us to do it. Obviously.

This is what happens when the standards-writing bodies are the same as the lobbying bodies are the same as the professionals donig the work.
