Something Silver, Red and Blue…
Amtrak!
Amtrak hit the news today; unfortunately, it was for the wrong reason. Somehow, the power grid controlling the Northeast Corridor blacked out this morning, causing multiple Amtrak and commuter trains to stop for half of the day. This kind of media presence is exactly not what Amtrak wants; or, looking at things another way, it’s exactly what Amtrak needs.
Hopefully, Amtrak (and passenger rail) suppoters can use this instance to point out the need for capital infusion and infrastructure improvements in the Northeast Corridor (and across the country). According to one Transportation Department official, there is a backlog of capital projects, to the tune of $5 Billion. Billion. Yup.
With that money, Amtrak could upgrade the lines to better working condition, which would result in more on-time trains, safer travel, and, most likely, increased travel, because people would trust the rails more.
