Fun with Christmas Trees
December 02, 2006
Does anyone know a good way to keep cats from climbing the Christmas tree?
We purposely put the fake tree up this year, so that we can train these two beautiful cats… Other than using a water mister to spray their faces, I really have no clue.
Christa and I love having a Christmas tree. There’s got to be a way to make this work. Heck, my parent’s taught Smokey.
Comment, please!

But for help: don't let the cat's drink the water -- I think it could be poisonous!
From a website: Purchase a bottle of bitter apple from a pet store (8 oz will run about $6...a lot less than a trip to the vet!). Spray some on the tree and decorations (it does not damage them!). Animals usually hate the taste and don't bother going back to the items. Vets and humane societies recommend the use of bitter apple.
Or, the site also suggests that cats do not like citrus smells. Try rubbing a little orange peel or something around the base of the tree.

Don't you remember the time I came home from the bank and found the tree tipped over in the old family room? Other than that time Smokey never tried to climb the tree - but we had her declawed by Christmas so she never really knew how to climb a tree 0 r anything else for that matter. I think the spray bottle with tap water is a good idea - except your cats like water. Maybe you have to try Brian's idea.
