Question for Blogland
March 03, 2007
I have a question for all of you in internet-land.
What degree program would you expect me to have a PhD in?
In figuring your answer, don’t necessarily take my past degrees into account – not that they do not matter, but I don’t want to be limited in my possibilities.
You might wonder why I ask this question… Well, mainly just for fun. But I have to admit, being here at the OU Fine Arts Library with Christa has put a little back-to-grad-school-bug in me. Plus, I’ve been thinking about a PhD possibility since my undergrad education.
So many possibilities, so little time… Degrees I’ve thought of:
• Planning (Focus on transportation, environmental, and/or land use)
• History (Focus on things from general U.S. History, Transportation History, Engineering History, History of the Built Environment, Architectural History…)
• Geography (Focus on the Built Environment, how geography affects and is affected by development, GIS-related studies…)
• Engineering (Focus on stormwater, transportation, bridges, roads… anything and everything)
Yeah… broad is a good word for my thoughts. I just like thinking… just the other day I was trying to help map the population density of cities in the State of Oklahoma for use in determining the proper boundaries for the state branches of the Oklahoma Chapter of the American Public Works Association. Or, the week before that, it was mentally studying the best possible maintenance system for the 500 plus bridges in the City of Oklahoma City. Before that, dissecting the history of travel and Route 66’s affect on the travel industry.
Where will my mind go next?!? I suppose it’s not tough to determine why I’ve never really been able to focus on one hobby for too long.
