Grandest Flop of All
October 14, 2007
Well, not quite, but close.
Christa and I attended the Oklahoma Centennial Parade this afternoon. It was promoted as the Grandest paraded in Oklahoma history. Big names, big floats, big fun.
Not really. The parade started on time with a large cavalcade of Police/Sheriff/State Trooper motorcycle officers. It was downhill from there.
As the parade went on, the gaps between floats and/or bands became worse and worse. The largest gap, in my unofficial timing, was nearly five full minutes. People walked around in the street… wondering if the parade was done.
There was supposed to be a special surprise… which, other than a B-2 bomber flying over at the beginning, was not to be. The end of the parade was Miss Oklahoma led by two bicycle-riding Oklahoma City Police Department officers. No fire truck… no special ending, nothing.
Crap.
Maybe Tulip Time has ruined me for good… I’m not sure. I will say that the St. Patrick’s Day Parade was much more entertaining this past spring. I’d like to call today’s parade the Grandest Flop of All.
The City spent countless man hours preparing for the parade. We moved traffic signals and light poles, trimmed trees, and closed roads days in advance of this spectacle. Next time the City agrees to spend this much, we might want to check to see if the parade is going to deliver what it promised.
